31 Days To Make A House A Home: Day 3: Comin' Clean

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I came home to quite a surprise today.  After a long day at work (today's  my Friday!) I confess I was not looking forward to trying to figure out what the heck I was going to do for tonight's challenge.  You know those brilliant bloggers who actually plan out their challenges?  Yeah.  I'm not one of them.  HOnestly I was dreading walking into the house.

But apparently Paul caught the "homing" bug.

This is what my living room looked like a few days ago:

Yeah.  I hope you're judging me.  You SHOULD be.  I have no idea how we let it get this bad.  Oh wait, I do.  We both hate cleaning and have prioritized other things above keeping our house nice.  Never again, I tell you.

Apparently, instead of taking study breaks to play video games or nap, Paul decided to focus on the house.  I've been secretly hoping he would do this for weeks, but would have settled at a load of laundry or some dishes.  (Which he actually has done a couple of times!)  Instead, I got this:

And this:

Much, much better.  Seriously?  How great is my husband?!  If he had a chart, I'd put 25 gold stars on it, maybe even 26. I'm absolutely ECSTATIC.  It looks like a whole new house!  I cannot express how grateful I am that he did this.  Now, instead of focusing on picking up, I can focus on paint samples and picking colors:

I'm kind of on a purple kick right now, what do you think?

He did however, drop down to 20 gold stars after I walked in the bedroom and saw this.  -__-

I guess it's time for some 30 Rock and a folding party!

See you tomorrow!

  2. Keeping things picked up really helps you feel like your house is a home! Is the purple paint for the livingroom? Or a different room? Just wondering :)

    1. It's potentially for an accent wall for the wall to the right of the door. You can kind of see it in the big shot of the living room. I'm kind of scared of making a big commitment like that, though.

    2. Purple IS kind of brave for a living room. But you'll never know unless you try. If you do it and hate it, hey, it's just one wall. You can always paint over it! On the other hand, if you really love purple but don't want to commit to a wall, try bringing in more purple accessories...pillows, art, etc. Check out thrift stores and dollar stores for vases and frames that you can spray paint to the desired color.

  4. Also - Tommy and I adopted a chore chart that we use each night after the kids are in bed. It's about an hour of work, but it keeps the house in pretty good shape, and keeps us from spending an entire weekend day catching up. I'm willing to share it with you if you think it would help!

  5. I can totally relate to that one except the clean up usually ends up being a tag team effort between the two of us! It is amazing how easily the house can get out of control when we have other more important things to do like spend time with our families :)

  9. Megan, I can totally relate to the 'we both hate cleaning' sentiment, and how hard it is to get on top of things when you let it go for a while. And yes, I do the dump-it-all-on-the-bed thing too!!! That's why I'm doing my 31 Days, to set better habits at picking up regularly etc, and not letting the mountains of stuff grow!! I've been doing that over about the last 5 years, and whilst I'm much better at keeping on top of things than I used to be, it is still a 'chore', still something I have to be intentional about. Just keep doing :-)

  12. That's awesome that you got your hubby motivated. That's a reward within itself. What about making one of those mood board things so you can have an overall vision of what kind of look you're going for. That always helps me.

    1. Thanks lady! I thought it was terribly funny that that person felt the need to criticize me anonymously instead of owning his/her comment. I'm really glad you're joining me on this journey!
