It Would Appear

APPEAR
1a : to be or come in sight <the sun appears on the horizon>
b : to show up <appears promptly at eight each day>
2: to come formally before an authoritative body <must appear in court today>
3: to have an outward aspect : seem <appears happy enough>

"He'll appear content, he always does," Byron says, shaking his head.

"I don't know if he can handle this level of disappointment." Nadia inspects her nails.

Byron crosses the room and sits on the plush couch, sinking in deeper than he was prepared.  "The wedding will go on as planned."

Nadia takes a long drink from her tumbler.  "The lemonade needs more whiskey."

That's going to make for an awkward honeymoon.

  1. Nice anticipation and anxiety blended in this story. Outward appearances are not always evidence of internal emotions.

  4. This makes me wonder how many of us hide behind appearances, and how many people realize that's exactly what we're doing.

  5. Yep. I do wonder how many knew at the last moment but were too afraid to walk away then. Great story in a few words!
